Katy Perry, the international musical sensation, shows the boys how it’s done before they speed away into a new season of IPL. Having ruled the music charts and won every prestigious award from the Billboard to the Grammy, the pop princess is all set to storm the IPL 2012 Opening Nite, an evening that will set the tone for a summer of high-quality cricket.
In a brief chat, Perry told us what she feels about IPL 2012.
Are you looking forward to your performance here in India?
I’m very much looking forward to performing in India for the first time, to be able to bring part of my California Dreams Tour to India and to be in India for my fans. I’m very excited to meet them and see them, and finally bring them some happiness in the form of music.
Are you a sports enthusiast? Have you been introduced to the delights of cricket?
I’m a sports enthusiast. I like to watch all kinds of different sports. I just performed for a sporting event – the Super Bowl – and had a fantastic time. I liked the spirit in the crowd, and the enthusiasm that the sport brings, and the community it brings together. I have not ever played cricket, but I’m excited to learn in India.
Your music, like the IPL, is a combination of styles and influences. Which of your songs celebrates the spirit of the competition?
I think ‘Firework’ is the song that can give you that extra spurt of energy that you need when you’re playing sports or in any type of competition. It has a very inspirational message, and a thumping beat in the background which always helps if you need a soundtrack for energy.
You will get together with some big Bollywood stars at the IPL 2012 Opening Nite. Your thoughts?
I’m very excited to be able to collaborate with some Bollywood stars in India for the IPL. I think Bollywood is amazing and fun and over-the-top, and I love to be involved with a lot of things that are over-the-top, so I think it’s a good match. I really like their spirit and charm and sense of humor, and I’m hoping that I can bring some Western love to Bollywood and then take home some Bollywood to the Western world.
You have a huge fan following in India, your message to all fans?
I’d like to say, “Hi everyone! I’m very excited! I know that everyone in India has waited for a very long time for me to come and perform professionally. I’ve enjoyed India on my own time personally, and now it’s time to give back to the fans. I’m really excited to be a part of something really big in India and to soak up all the culture and beauty that is India, and to learn about the country and the people, and just have an incredible experience.”
